And so the perfect season attempt is over early - now the Datsuns can concentrate on just winning games without that perfect season pressure! Thanks Ponsonby City - well played and too good for us today.
It all could have been different! The Datsuns started off the game like they meant business. There was a long period of attack where City couldn't get away from their own line! Hard tackles and constant pressure from Dylan, Finn and Kodi kept City pinned deep in their own terriotory. However, they used a well placed kick to get back a little territory, and despite great covering from Tyreese at the back, City managed to turn the ball back over and score a try against the run of play. Better use of the space available and the Datsuns could have been a couple of tries to the good, but were instead down. That jump started the arm wrestle that was the feature of the first half from that point on.
The Datsuns, led by the first of a two try effort from player of the day Jaimee, helped put some points on the board to back up the strong Datsuns ruck clean out. Josh put in some hard work, making sure he was ready to tidy up around the rucks on 'D', marking up well against the opposition ball runners. Sammy continued his good work being available in support, and carrying the ball hard when he got a the chance. With David continuing to be a powerhouse with another brace of tries, both teams headed into the sheds (alright, under the uprights in the in goal) at half time where they started the game, level, with the score at 20 points a piece.
At kickoffs, hard chasing and pressure can make a huge difference, and JR showed his blazing pace and determination again with a hard chase leading to pressure and a turnover at the kickoff. Lucky he's been sick all week or he may well have run so fast he'd open a worm hole and go back in time. Blake managed to turn around his tackling and put some big hits on the opposition. And the backs put some big runs in, led by hard running 2nd five Adam carving up the middle off good ball from his inside backs.
The hard work by the forwards at training on their lineout options paid big dividends, with Dean scooting away from an attacking position to pick up a great try. And last, but not least, John kept the Datsuns efforts honest in the face of some quick points against us, with his tireless, hard cleanouts at rucks, his strong tackling and some hard ball running.
But alas, all that hard work, right up to the final whistle, wasn't enough. Fortunately, we know where we can improve, and we're not too far away from doing so! Just some extra effort cleaning out, an extra pass here or there and the awareness to run hard in support, and we'll get to sing that victory song again soon!

Victory song for victorious singing!
Here are the lyrics to the often heard, never beaten Datsuns victory song, copyright Datsuns 2014:
Datsuns, Datsuns we are driven,
Datsuns, Datsuns that's a given!
Datsuns, Datsuns always bring it.
Datsuns, Datsuns hear us sing it!
Others try to bring us down,
So we put them ON THE GROUND!
We are young and fast and keen
The greatest EVER rugby team!
go... go... Datsuns.. go
go... Go... Datsuns.. Go
Go... Go... DATSUNS GO
GO! GO! DATSUNS GO!
gggggoooooooooooOOOOOOOO DATSUNS!!!!!!
Datsuns, Datsuns we are driven,
Datsuns, Datsuns that's a given!
Datsuns, Datsuns always bring it.
Datsuns, Datsuns hear us sing it!
Others try to bring us down,
So we put them ON THE GROUND!
We are young and fast and keen
The greatest EVER rugby team!
go... go... Datsuns.. go
go... Go... Datsuns.. Go
Go... Go... DATSUNS GO
GO! GO! DATSUNS GO!

POST GAME: WIN vs Suburbs Cougars at Lloyd Elsmore Park 45 - 25
Wow! What a way to start off our season proper, with a magnificent team win over Suburbs Cougars by 45 - 25, and getting to sing the victory song at our first chance!
Suburbs Cougars being nice enough to give up home advantage for our Pakuranga United 50th Anniversary celebration, would have been looking for some payback after going down to the Mighty Datsuns last season. By gosh, they started the game playing like they wanted it too!
After going down to an early try, the Datsuns engines started to roar, lead by a player of the day performance from David. He couldn't do it alone though! Some excellent ball was being delivered by the forwards, with fantastic cleaning out at the ruck from Dean and Dylan. Joshua and Sam were beasts on defence, often filling in the one and two off defensive spots, ready to make life tough for the Cougars, who really struggled to get go forward ball in the face of the Datsuns wall.
Coming out in the second half trailing 40 - 5, the Cougars showed they were made of stern stuff, and started to use space to spread the ball wide to close the gap, but the Datsuns weren't finished! John and Carl's Jnr award winner Blake both doing hard work, running powerfully with the ball, chasing down the occassional breaks from the Cougars and showing heart and courage and a 'never say die' Datsuns attitude to make big tackles. Taking advantage of those opportunites, Kodi and Jamie made sure they were always there, ready to clean up the ball, make a well timed pass out to the waiting support, making huge tackles if needed, and making the occassional big break in return.
The Datsuns have a lot of speed and guile, but they also have some power! None show that better than Finn, Adam and Tyreese, who made strong tackle after strong tackle, made menaces of themselves trying to cleanout at the ruck and turn the ball over for the good guys, and running hard with the ball - with both Finn and Tyreese showing how hard they are to stop when given a chance on attack - both scoring tries either in close quaters or in one on one situations.
Finally, a big shoutout to JR (it was either JR, or the Green Flash) making the break of the game, out running their best player, to charge up the field on turnover ball and score his first ever try in his first ever full game of rugby.
Actual game footage of JR running for his try!
The Datsuns show, power, pace, guile and heart to get the season off to the best possible start, and getting to sing that victory song. See you at training next week fellas!

The Datsuns are represented in the Beecroft Cherrybrook team!
Hi folks
I wanted to post my congratulations to David for making the Beecroft Cherrybrook team to tour Australia next year. He's been a strong member of the Datsuns all year and I know I speak on behalf of you all when we wish him all the best as he goes on to represent Pakuranga United on behalf of our team.
Awesome stuff David!!!
To those boys that trialled and missed out, keep your heads up. You all must have been very close to making the team, and I know that a couple of you will have only just missed out on a spot. The best thing you can do is to keep working hard, keep improving, keep learning and keep doing your best for the Datsuns and, who knows, you may get a shot at a rep team some time in the future.
See you at training Thursday!
Paul
PS The ARU draw has been amended and we now have an extra scheduled game for 30 August at home v Waiheke. That should be a great way to finish off the season and will be a measure to see how far we've come.

Medals and Pakuranga U9s tournament
Hi folks
Two things:
Medals
We will be providing medals to the boys to commemorate their first season together as the Datsuns! They cost $6.50 (which is a special Club discounted price) and are awesome for the boys to receive at prizegiving to remember their season with.
Can I please get the money for these (exact change please as I'm unlikely to hold any and would rather not find change for 10 folks!) by training on Thursday week (ie the 21st).
Pak U9s tournament
The end of season tournament on the 31st of August is being run by our Club for our grade (ie U9 restricted grade 10 a side). They've costed it at $120 per team which covers the cost of a sausage, drink and players medal for each player. They're guaranteeing a minimum of 3 games on the day of 10mins each way (15mins each way for finals).
Given the cost I will only enter the team if we can get 12 players (ie $10 per player). We can get these numbers if we get enough Datsuns as there are a couple of players from other teams looking for a game as their team isn't entering. Please let me know by Saturday at the latest if you're interested in playing in the tournament as I need to get back to the organisers to confirm, or otherwise, our participation.
Any questions please drop me a line!
Cheers
